In 1897, Barnardo's opened a receiving home at Oakwood, a house at 75 Bannerman Avenue East, Winnipeg, Manitoba. The home provided temporary initial accommodation for Barnardo's children immigrating to Canada until they were found new homes or workplaces.
In around 1906, the home relocated to new premises on Pacific Avenue, Winnipeg.
